Gluten Free Makeup

Wedding season is right around the corner! If you’ve been invited to attend a wedding, either as a guest or a bridesmaid, you may be wondering what makeup brands are safe for you to use. Gluten in beauty products can be particularly hard to spot since it’s typically hidden in terminology we’d never see on a food label. That’s why we’ve taken the guesswork out of it for you by compiling the most extensive list of gluten free makeup you’ll find on the internet. We’ve also included a list of ingredients to look out for if you decide to stray from this list and choose a product that’s not explicitly labeled gluten free. As always, we recommend checking the product’s label or brand’s website to confirm the gluten free status as this can change at any time without warning.

Tricky Terminology

Look out for the following ingredients, as they indicate that gluten is or may be present in your cosmetic!

  • Avena sativa

  • Cyclodextrin

  • Dextrin

  • Dextrin palmitate

  • Hordeum distichon

  • Hordeum vulgare extract

  • Hydrolyzed vegetable protein

  • Malt extract

  • Secale cereal

  • Triticum amino acids

  • Triticum lipids

  • Triticum vulgare

  • Yeast extract

It goes without saying that, in addition to the ingredients noted above, you should also avoid any cosmetics that have wheat, barley, rye, malt, or oat listed anywhere in their ingredients list.

Stay tuned next month for part 2: skin and body care brands and products!

REGINA’S TIP:

You may be wondering if it’s really necessary for all of your cosmetics to be gluten free. Some celiacs require this, while others feel it’s unnecessary for beauty products such as mascara or eye liner to be gluten free. In the end, it comes down to what you personally are most comfortable with (and maybe a discussion with your doctor). That being said, you should absolutely always require any cosmetics that will be put on or near your lips to be gluten free, as you have a possibility of accidentally ingesting these products. Additionally, you’ll want to opt for all of your cosmetics to be gluten free if you are prone to allergic skin reactions to gluten.
